ANTERIOR APPROACH FOR TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

Dr. Beard is excited to offer the direct anterior approach for total hip replacement surgery.

“Anterior” refers to the front of the hip. This is in contrast to “posterior” which refers to the back of the hip.

The anterior approach is less invasive than the traditional approaches to the hip because it utilizes the interval between the muscles of the hip as opposed to releasing the muscles and tendons around the hip.

Typical location of the surgical incision for the anterior approach

Numerous studies have reported on the benefits of the anterior hip approach in hip replacement surgery.

Benefits of Anterior Approach

  • Provides opportunity for direct comparison of leg lengths with Xray guidance.
  • Allows for use of Xray to confirm component position.
  • Less muscle trauma and pain
  • No position-related or activity restrictions after surgery.
  • Low rate of dislocation compared to the classic posterior approach

The anterior approach is an excellent option for most patients, however, not all patients are candidates for the anterior approach.
